Fusion is a physical process in which two or more atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy. This process powers the sun and other stars, where extreme temperature and pressure allow light nuclei, such as hydrogen isotopes, to overcome their electrostatic repulsion and merge. In technology and research, controlled fusion is pursued as a potential source of nearly limitless, low-carbon energy, usually using deuterium and tritium. The term can also be used more broadly for the merging of different elements, such as musical styles or companies, but in scientific contexts it mainly refers to nuclear fusion.
