Jabber is an open, XML-based communication protocol and ecosystem used mainly for instant messaging, presence information, and real-time communication. It originated as a decentralized system that allows users on different servers to exchange messages, similar to email but for chat. Technically, it refers to the early name and community around what later became standardized as XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol). Jabber enables features such as one-to-one chats, group chats, contact lists, and status messages, and can be extended for voice, video, and data exchange. Many messaging servers and clients still implement Jabber/XMPP today.
