Stereotypes are widely held, simplified beliefs or assumptions about members of a social group. They attribute fixed characteristics, behaviors, or abilities to people based on categories such as gender, ethnicity, age, profession, or nationality. Stereotypes can be both positive and negative, but they are usually inaccurate or exaggerated and ignore individual differences. They often arise from limited experience, social norms, media portrayals, or historical power structures. Stereotypes can influence expectations, communication, and decision-making, and they contribute to prejudice and discrimination. Challenging stereotypes requires critical thinking, contact with diverse individuals, and reflection on one’s own biases.
